50th Anniversary of the Discovery of Plate Tectonics
written by Dr. Joel Cuello
It was 50 years ago this year - with the publication in 1967 in the journal Nature of "The North Pacific: An Example of Tectonics on a Sphere", co authored by Dan McKenzie and Robert Parker - when the theory of plate tectonics formally came into being.
It is difficult to believe now that before 1967, scientists were in most part grappling the dark when it came to pointing out the causes of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

With the theory of plate tectonics, a unified framework that works has come into being.

CATCH-ALL as a Tool in Apprehending Vehilces with Traffic Violations
The research team lead by Dr. Elmer Dadios has developed a way to apprehend traffic violators using without contact.  CATCH-ALL (Contactless Apprehension of Traffic Violators on a 24-Hour Basis and All-Vehicle Detection System) Software uses CCTVs installed around Manila, which will detect license plate of traffic violators and displays their violation in LED Boards.  Click here to download and watch Dr. Dadios' interview with CNN Philippines.

Discovery of the Evolutionary Steps of Kuphus polythalamia
Scientists studied the anatomical structure of the giant ship worm Kuphus polythalamia and discovered the presence of chemoautotrophic symbionts in its gills.  The presence of these symbionts consume hydrogen sulfide which which help extend the "wooden steps" theory.  Click here to read their article.
